This is a simplified genealogy of the kings
of Judah (including the Throne of David). This diagram
comes to us by E. Raymond Capt's book "Jacob's
Pillar" and you can order Capt's book by this link: http://www.artisanpublishers.com See
the text below for an explanation of this chart.

The top of the chart shows the two sons of Judah, Zarah to the left and Pharez to the right. Genesis 49:10 says, The sceptre shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be. From the time that this prophecy was given, the sons of Zarah ruled and they left Egypt before the rest of the Israelites. For simplicity, these fellows are basically to the left of the chart. David, his descendents and ultimately Christ comes from the Pharez line. Later on, God made a covenant with David that he should also have an eternal throne (II Samuel 7). This was understood to go through Solomon's lineage as stated in 1Chronicles 28:5: And of all my sons, (for the LORD hath given me many sons,) he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel. The throne was passed down father to son until a curse was pronounced on both Jehoiakim and his son Jehoiachin. We can read the curse of Jehoiachin in Jeremiah 22:30. This effectively prevented any future kings from reigning in Judah when the Jews returned from their captivity. However, because of the breach prophesied in Genesis 38 when Judah's twin sons were born, God chose the lineage of Zedekiah to perpetuate the throne of David and Solomon (Ezekiel 17:22) to rule over the House of Israel (not Judah) until the rightful King (Christ) from Jehoiachin's lineage would again take the throne at his Second Coming. This would effectively repair the breach. Notice that the chart says that Jesus' lineage from Joseph (and Jehoiachin) is "putative only". That is because of the Virgin Birth. The Messiah would not be qualified King with such a curse, although the rightful King is through that cursed lineage. So how did God remedy this? God used the Virgin Birth to give Jesus legal ties to this lineage, but came through an alternate blood lineage (through Mary) from David's son Nathan. This made Jesus both David's son and legal heir, albeit only a legal son of Solomon. I believe that Solomon represented the lineage of kings in the Earthly sense, and Jesus (through Nathan) represented a separate branch of David from the heavenly realm. Therefore, since God promised an eternal throne to Solomon as well, we see that he perpetuated it through Zedekiah's line which was conjoined to Zarah's line. From that we see that this was overturned to Ireland, Scotland, and finally Britain as scripture says in Ezekiel 21:27, I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and I will give it him. In end times the heavenly King Jesus will take the Earthly throne (which is rightfully his). He is of that separate, heavenly realm but has legal ties to the Earthly throne when both will be occupied by Christ as Luke 1:32-33 says, He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
Notice that Jesus has ties to the tribe of Levi (as does the monarchy) merging the Priest-King role. Luke 1:5 says of Mary's cousin Elisabeth, There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
